So I was just thinking about those posts you get in the Discworld tag about the way belief works on the Disc and how Vetinari and/or Vimes is so integral to the way Ankh-Morpork works that they might just sort of… not ever die.
You know, the ones like ‘Vimes is going to become a god of policemen and he’s going to hate it”.
Well. What if it happens to both of them? There are two parts to the city, after all. ‘Proud Ankh’ needs taking down a peg or two (or seven) by Sam Vimes, and if anyone can terrify ‘pestilent Morpork’ into being better then it’s Havelock Vetinari. And they can drive each other mad with stealth puns for centuries, if they want.
Also, this would potentially make them literally Law And Order, and that just seems very fitting in a way that would probably annoy them both.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL
“oh we shouldn’t teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where it’s noisy or they need to be quiet”
My mom learned it because she figured she’ll go deaf when she gets old
My family went holiday SCUBA diving once, and a couple of Deaf guys were in the group. I was really little and I spent most of the briefing overcome with the realization that while the rest of us were going to have regulators in our mouths and be underwater fairly soon, they were going to be able to do all the same stuff and keep talking.
The only reason some form of sign language is not a standard skill is ableism, as far as I can tell.
why is miles being middle to upper middle class so hard to comprehend? He never had to starve, his parents are happy to buy him art supplies, he never had to steal he never needed donations from the people of New York. Literally, Peter is canonically more broke than Miles.
YouTube’s algorithm…I mean yes this is about flat-earthers, and we all like to laugh about them, but something has to be said about the fact that conspiracy theories are spread so easily to impressionable youth at a GLOBAL scale. And its not just flat-earthers, it’s Naziism, it’s anti-Semitism, islamophobia, it’s all the terrible radicalization that is happening. It’s all connected, and it’s so so easy to become radicalized because of YouTubes algorithm.
They do this for just about anything, too. Even if you watch overtly left-wing videos they will recommend hard-right video and conspiracy theorists to you. I got a white supremacist creator recommended to me from watching a Bernie Sanders interview.
They run hard-right ads over Left-wing creators now, too. Over a Majority Report video I got an ad for an “anti-PC,” pro-Trump news network. LGBTQ creators I watch are consistently getting gay conversion therapy ads played over them.
The Right loves to scream censorship when they get warning for using racial slurs or demonitized for pushing conspiracy theories, but the Left get hits just as hard if not harder on social media.
This happens even in videos where the title and subject matter do not make it immediately obvious. Watch any videos about video games? Prepare to be recommended videos that start on somewhat valid video game criticism and somewhere in the middle slide right into “GAMES ARE BEING RUINED AND IT’S ALL THE FAULT OF FEMINISM AND THE ESS JAY DOUBLE YEWS!” Nazis are going hard for that demographic and the shit is everywhere.
I watch spinning videos (fibrecraft, not exercise), videos of singing and singing critique and the occasional video game walkthrough if I can find one unannoying enough. I’m subscribed to multiple feminist youtubers.
Yesterday youtube suggested that I should watch PewDiePie and something titled “feminism is cancer.”
Kate Bornstein in TransSisters: The Journal of Transsexual Feminism issue 5, volume 1. 1994.
Kate: Well, here I think it gets down to a difference in world view. We grew up in utter isolation, desperate for a language that would describe who and what we were because we weren’t like the other boys and girls. And so we grew up building up a world-view that could explain our craziness, our otherness, and that world-view would include for me The National Enquirer article that broke the Christine Jorgensen story and Tula’s first book I Am a Woman and Canary Conn’s book. It didn’t include John Money because I just couldn’t understand the big words, but it included everything I could read. It included a lot of pornography. Oh god, I would read all that pom, and in my head sill the crossdressing and the fetishism would get all mixed up with sex and gender. So my world view was built up on every scrap I could inhale.
From other transsexuals whom I talk to, it was a common experience that we were just so hungry for ourselves, which is why I think something like your magazine is so important because it’s providing a way to look at ourselves as not crazy, as not utterly isolated and alone. But when you bring that world-view in contact with someone else—say you and I, here we are talking — and I grew up with one world view that said one thing, and you grew up with another thing, and we really have nothing to pin it on because it’s all based on the shifting sands of “we don’t really know what it is, but we feel it’s there,” then we threaten each other. And I think that that is the stumbling block to community. We need to maintain our own world-views; we need to maintain our own integrity, and we need to link arms with those who don’t feel exactly the same way we do, and we need to take real care to nurture differing voices in our community and welcome them.
I like the implication that Dracula recognizes Trevor as a Belmont because of how wimpy his punches are.
I like that interpretation more. “Ah yes, this bastard, who’s first instinct upon seeing the world’s most powerful vampire was to punch him in the face. Yes, he’s from that family isn’t he?”
*gets punched in the face*
“There’s only one clan of absolute fucking lunatics in this backwater sty crazy enough to see the avatar of evil and throw a haymaker. Belmont, how’re you doing? How’s the family?”
Yeah, ANYONE throwing a punch on Dracula would be wimpy. Belmonts are just wild bastards who don’t care, its the thought that counts.
“Nondisabled people using amenities originally designed for disabled people does nothing but improve our lives”
